Chapter Nine

Holly rubbed the back of her neck, hoping to ease the stress from her muscles. Jake had said it was her choice whether or not she wanted to go to Aspen but somehow she doubted that. She couldn’t shake the feeling that it was some sort of test. Maybe if she passed it, he would trust her enough to let her go, and she could leave.

The thought sat heavy on her heart. The more days that passed while she stayed with him, the more comfortable she was getting. Not having to constantly look over her shoulder, not having to stay in fight or flight mode was wonderful, but it was a fake reality. Jake didn’t really trust her and she might as well face the fact that soon she’d be back on the run.

As they’d ridden to his house together after being at the office all day, he’d told her to let him know later this evening if she was going. Holly didn’t see how she could say no. There was still more she had to share to protect his company. After they’d arrived at his house, he’d left to run an errand, and Holly had gone right back to work writing out as much thief-proof information as she could, but the words were starting to run together.

All Holly wanted to do was rest her head on the desk and sleep. It wasn’t like her to not have any energy. No matter how little sleep she had the night before, she was usually able to function fine. For the past few days, though, she felt like her ass was dragging. Maybe it was the stress.

Through her open bedroom door, she was struck by the smell of meat cooking. Her stomach churned, and she rushed to the bathroom, barely making it in time before she was sick. She rinsed her face and brushed her teeth, then took a seat on the side of the tub.

The tiredness, the nausea… No way. That couldn’t possibly be happening. She chewed on her thumbnail. Out of all the condoms Jake had used that night, one of them had broken, but surely it hadn’t resulted in pregnancy. She’d been told that she couldn’t have children. Holly stopped the freak out before it reached an epic proportion. The doctor had to be correct. There was nothing to worry about until there was proof she had something to worry about. She’d know for sure if she missed her cycle in a few days, but until then, she wasn’t going to worry. Ha. Famous last words.

Leaving the bathroom, she went into the bedroom, closed the door and called Mia. “Jake wants me to go to Aspen with him when he meets a client. I’m torn between going and not knowing if I should leave Liam.”

“Liam is fine. He’s working this weekend and my brothers are still keeping a close eye on him. Plus there’s been no sign of Burt. Maybe he left town.”

Holly’s fingers tightened on the phone. “Has Liam asked for me?”

“No.
